The Dual Hydration Strategy: Before cut flowers can absorb nutrients or undergo chemical loading, their internal water balance must be restored. Rehydration recovers stem turgidity, while pulsing delivers a surge of energy for long-distance transport.

1. Rehydration Fundamentals

Cut flowers that have spent hours in transit or dry pack boxes become water stressed. If flowers are placed directly into nutrient or pulse solutions while water stressed, uptake will be erratic.

Never Put Sugar in Rehydration Solutions: Sugar significantly increases water viscosity, slowing down initial capillary travel up desiccated stems. Rehydration solutions must consist strictly of water, an acidifying agent, and a biocide.

2. Acidification & Wetting Agents

Water with a neutral or alkaline pH travels sluggishly up plant vascular xylem. Lowering the water pH to pH 3.5 dramatically improves water conductance:

  • Acidifying Agents: Citric acid, 8-Hydroxyquinoline citrate (8-HQC), or aluminium sulphate (Alum). Test with pool pH strips or litmus paper.
  • Basic Commercial Recipe: 2.5 grams of food-grade citric acid per 10 Litres of water, plus a few drops of chlorine bleach biocide.
  • Anionic Wetting Agents (e.g. Agral®): Adding a minuscule concentration (0.01% to 0.1%) lowers water surface tension. This is especially proven for woody-stemmed blooms including roses, proteas, and native foliage that have been dry-shipped.

3. Pulsing for High Energy Reserves

Pulsing involves standing stems in a high-sugar solution for a defined period (usually 12 to 24 hours at low temperature or 2 to 4 hours at room temperature) to “supercharge” the bloom before cold transport:

  • High Sugar Concentrations: Up to 20% sugar (200 g/L sucrose) is used in pulsing solutions.
  • Target Crops: Extremely beneficial for bud-cut crops that must open fully in the florist or vase, such as gladioli, carnations, sweet peas, and gypsophila.
  • Hormone Additives: Pulsing can also combine plant hormones (e.g. gibberellins) to prevent leaf yellowing in alstroemeria and lilies.

4. Quick Germicidal Dip for Chrysanthemums & Gerberas

A rapid 10-second pulse dip of stem bases in silver nitrate solution acts as an effective germicide for chrysanthemums and gerberas. Stems are dipped for 10 seconds, rinsed in clean water, and placed into preservative. The submerged stem ends will turn dark brown from silver reaction, confirming vascular protection.
