1. Core Environmental Specifications

The fundamental rule of commercial cut flower cold rooms is maintaining temperatures between 0°C and 2°C with high relative humidity (90–95%) for all temperate cut flower species. (Tropical blooms such as anthuriums and heliconias should be kept at 12°C – 15°C to prevent chill injury).

Shed Placement Tips:
  • Shelter the coolroom structure from direct afternoon sun to prevent refrigeration compressor overload.
  • Avoid installing coolrooms directly against the western wall of packing sheds.
  • Inspect door seals regularly. Air leaks pull moisture-laden exterior air inside, causing wall condensation, icing, and corrosion.

2. Preventing Petal Desiccation

Even cold air will strip moisture from blooms if there is constant, direct air velocity. Fans blowing directly onto delicate petals will cause severe petal curl and dehydration within 24 hours.

  • Avoid Stacking Directly Under Fans: Position shelves away from the direct evaporator fan airstream.
  • Create Humid Micro-Climates: Sleeving bunches or draping lightweight plastic film over flower trolleys traps a high-humidity microclimate around the blooms without touching petals.
  • Bucket Sleeving: Slip a large clean plastic bag around the bucket extending upward past flower heads to shelter stock stored longer than 48 hours.

3. Temperature Cross-Checking

Never rely solely on external digital displays or wall-mounted gauges. Hang a calibrated spirit or digital thermometer in the centre of the room near the stored flower stock to verify true internal temperatures.

4. Loading Dock & Exhaust Protection

Keep cut flowers completely isolated from engine exhausts during loading and unloading. Never leave vehicle or forklift engines idling near coolroom entrance doors or packing bays. Exhaust gases contain ethylene and carbon monoxide that permanently ruin consignments in minutes.

5. Hygiene & Chemical Storage

  • Store floral preservatives and S.T.S. concentrates inside the coolroom to extend shelf life.
  • Scrub coolroom floors and benches with an antimicrobial biocide during weekly stock rotations.
  • Strictly isolate ethylene-sensitive flower varieties from any nearby culinary fruit storage.
